"Black Friday" was coined from a retail term. Being "in the black" means businesses are actually making money. After being "in the red" (not seeing much profits) all year, the Christmas season pushes them into the black. The day after Thanksgiving is the kickoff to the Christmas shopping season. That's where the term came from. It has since become a festival of ridiculousness.
